You book a place on Airbnb, you pay, you receive the confirmation. Then on the day, the host cancels, or the accommodation doesn’t look anything like the photos. What actually happens? Airbnb includes a mechanism called AirCover for travelers with every booking. This mechanism, often misunderstood, deserves to be detailed before you go.
AirCover Claim: What Really Blocks Travelers
Most guides describe AirCover as an automatic and smooth protection. The reality of claims is rougher. In recent years, the volume of complaints related to AirCover refund refusals has significantly increased, particularly on consumer platforms and community forums.
The most common issue does not concern the coverage itself, but the burden of proof. To obtain a refund related to non-compliant accommodation, Airbnb requires photos, dated messages, and quick reporting (usually within the first hours after arrival). After this deadline, the chances of success drop.
Another underestimated point: the claims process has become more demanding in recent years, with strengthened documentary checks. Knowing how the AirCover traveler insurance works before you go allows you to anticipate these constraints rather than discovering them in the middle of a dispute.

AirCover for Travelers: Four Situations Covered by Airbnb
AirCover is not a traditional travel insurance. It is a set of guarantees integrated into the platform, at no additional cost. Specifically, protection is activated in four specific cases:
- Cancellation by the host before arrival: Airbnb offers relocation to a similar accommodation or a full refund if nothing is available.
- Inability to access the accommodation on the day of arrival (missing key, incorrect code, unreachable host).
- Accommodation that does not match the listing at all, for example, a serious cleanliness issue, missing advertised amenities, or a different number of rooms than indicated.
- A situation where the traveler does not feel safe in the accommodation (lock issue, unreported presence of a third party, material danger).
In each of these cases, Airbnb helps find replacement accommodation or processes a refund, either full or partial depending on the situation. The key word here is “serious”: a dripping faucet does not trigger AirCover, but a property without hot water in the middle of winter does.
Airbnb Travel Insurance and AirCover: Two Distinct Protections
You may have noticed that Airbnb also offers optional travel insurance at the time of booking. This insurance, taken out through a partner insurer, covers risks that AirCover does not handle.
What Travel Insurance Covers (and Not AirCover)
AirCover protects against accommodation-related failures. Travel insurance, on the other hand, covers personal unforeseen events of the traveler:
- Trip cancellation for medical reasons or family emergencies.
- Delayed, damaged, or lost luggage during the journey.
- Medical expenses if a group member falls ill or gets injured during the stay.
- Transport delays that prevent arriving at the destination.
AirCover and travel insurance do not replace each other. The former protects against accommodation issues, while the latter protects against traveler issues. Both can work in parallel on the same booking.
Should You Take Out Travel Insurance as Well?
For a weekend in mainland France, the question arises little. For a long stay abroad, travel insurance covers medical expenses that no Airbnb guarantee covers. If your credit card already includes travel insurance, check for duplicates before paying for the same coverage twice.

“Major Disruptive Events” Policy: The Unknown Safety Net
Airbnb applies a specific policy in the event of an exceptional event (natural disaster, pandemic, armed conflict) that prevents the traveler from reaching their destination. This policy, distinct from AirCover, may allow for a full refund even if the usual cancellation conditions do not provide for it.
The catch: this policy does not apply automatically. Airbnb decides on a case-by-case basis which events are classified as “major.” A flight delay or a local strike does not necessarily trigger this protection. The list of recognized events is updated by Airbnb without a fixed schedule, making coverage unpredictable.
In practice, if a disaster occurs in your travel area, check the Airbnb help page dedicated to exceptional events before requesting a refund through the usual channels. The claims process is not the same.
Protecting Your Airbnb Stay: Reflexes to Adopt Before You Go
AirCover works best when the traveler documents everything. Upon arrival, photograph the accommodation and compare it with the listing. If a problem arises, report it via the app in the first hours. Every exchange with the host should go through Airbnb messaging to be traceable.
Also, check the cancellation conditions of your booking before confirming. AirCover intervenes in accommodation failures, but the cancellation conditions remain defined by the host (flexible, moderate, or strict). An accommodation with a strict policy will not be refunded if you simply change your mind.
Last point: AirCover only covers bookings made on Airbnb. If a host offers to settle outside the platform to avoid service fees, you lose all protection. The price displayed on Airbnb includes this guarantee, which puts the commission into perspective.
