When a nursing assistant or a nurse changes establishments within the non-profit private health and social sector, one question consistently arises: what portion of past experience will be recognized on the new payslip? The answer directly depends on the rules of the CCN 51, the national collective agreement of October 31, 1951, managed by the FEHAP.
These rules have a concrete impact on the gross salary from the very first month, and their application varies more than one might think from one employer to another.
The CCN 51 seniority recognition mechanism on the payslip
Before discussing percentages, let’s set the framework. The CCN 51 calculates salary according to a simple formula: job coefficient multiplied by the point value, all increased by a seniority rate. This rate rises by 1% for each year of service, with a cap set at 30% after 30 years.
Seniority recognition occurs at the time of recruitment. Article 08.03.2.1 of the agreement stipulates that the employer must take into account, at a minimum, 30% of the duration of professional experience acquired in the jobs or functions of the profession. In practical terms, a caregiver who has worked for 10 years in a nursing home and joins an associative clinic under CCN 51 will have at least 3 years of seniority recognized on their bonus.
The key word here is “at minimum.” Nothing prevents a facility director from recognizing more, up to the totality. This is a real negotiation lever during hiring, and understanding the rules governing the recognition of seniority in the CCN 51 agreement allows for a more precise argumentation in this exchange.

Value of the point 2026 and direct impact on the seniority bonus
You may have noticed that a revaluation of the point changes everything else in the calculation? Since amendment n° 2025-04, the value of the CCN 51 point is set at 4.568 euros. This 2% increase modifies the gross amount of each bonus related to seniority.
Let’s take an example. A nursing assistant classified at coefficient 376 with 8 years of recognized seniority receives a base salary of 376 x 4.568, which amounts to 1,717.57 euros gross. Their seniority bonus represents 8% of this amount, approximately 137 euros. The total reaches 1,854.98 euros gross before additional bonuses.
If this same professional had negotiated a 100% recognition of their 10 years instead of the minimum of 30%, their bonus would rise to 10% of the base salary, resulting in a significant monthly gain over the duration of the contract. The difference between the conventional minimum and a full recognition amounts to several tens of euros each month, compounded year after year.
Check the consistency on the payslip
The seniority rate must clearly appear on the payslip. Errors can occur, especially when the employer applies the old point or forgets to recalculate after a revaluation. Each revaluation of the point must trigger an automatic recalculation of the seniority bonus. If the gross total remains below the minimum wage (1,823.03 euros gross as of January 1, 2026), a differential supplement is paid.
Negotiating seniority recognition in nursing homes and the medico-social sector
The minimum of 30% is not a ceiling. This nuance makes all the difference, and many employees in the sector are unaware of it. During recruitment in a nursing home, in home care services, or in an associative clinic, management has some leeway to recognize experience beyond the conventional minimum.
Several factors work in favor of the candidate:
- Experience in a strictly identical position (same job, same type of structure) strengthens the request, as the agreement explicitly targets “jobs or functions of the profession.”
- Recruitment tensions in the healthcare sector provide a favorable power dynamic, especially for nurses and nursing assistants in rural or suburban areas.
- A written letter requesting recognition at a higher rate, sent before signing the contract, formalizes the negotiation and can be included in the hiring file.
Seniority recognition is negotiated before signing the contract, not after. Once the contract is signed with a specified rate, it becomes very difficult to change it without an amendment.
Transition between CCN 51 and CCN 66 agreements: what happens to seniority
When an establishment changes collective agreements (for example, from CCN 51 to CCN 66 following a merger or change of affiliation), the issue of seniority recognition becomes more complicated. The two agreements do not use the same scales or calculation mechanisms.
Case law has clarified that the reclassification must guarantee a level of remuneration at least equivalent. In practice, seniority acquired under CCN 51 is converted according to the rules of the new agreement, which can lead to discrepancies. An employee may find themselves with a different coefficient, a recalculated seniority rate, and a modified base salary.
Points to check in case of a change of agreement:
- Does the reclassification coefficient in the new scale correspond to the actual level of responsibility of the position?
- Has the seniority rate been fully transferred or partially absorbed into the new coefficient?
- Is the total gross salary (base + seniority + bonuses) at least equal to what was received before the change?

Notice period and seniority: a reform to watch
For contracts concluded from June 1, 2026, a reform caps the notice period at 52 weeks once the employee reaches 17 years of seniority. In CCN 51 establishments where employees accumulate internal seniority and recognition, this threshold can be reached more quickly than expected. Seniority recognition upon hiring can accelerate reaching this notice period cap, a point that neither the employer nor the employee always anticipates.
Seniority recognition in CCN 51 remains a regulated but negotiable right. The minimum of 30% protects the employee, while the margin beyond rewards those who document their career path. With the revaluation of the point to 4.568 euros and ongoing reforms regarding notice periods, each percentage of recognized seniority weighs a little more heavily on the payslip.
