Canal+ combines billing and access to Netflix within several of its offers, but the actual functioning of this pairing remains poorly understood. Two distinct accounts coexist, the activation process varies depending on the reception medium, and the included Netflix plan differs from one package to another. Here’s how to take advantage of this mechanism without any unpleasant surprises.

Two separate accounts behind a single Canal+ bill

The technical point that most guides gloss over is that Canal+ and Netflix remain two independent accounts. Subscribing to a Canal+ offer that includes Netflix does not automatically create a Netflix profile. You need to activate a separate Netflix account from the Canal+ customer area after creating your Canal+ account.

This separation has a direct consequence on your data: Netflix applies its own terms of use and its own personal data processing policy, independently of Canal+. Your viewing history, profiles, and recommendations are managed exclusively on the Netflix side.

In practice, if you were already a Netflix subscriber before going through Canal+, you can link your existing account. Canal+ then takes care of the billing, and Netflix suspends its direct debit. You retain your history, profiles, and preferences. The procedure to set up a Canal Plus and Netflix subscription involves an activation link received by email after subscribing.

Standard Netflix plan or Standard with ads: what each Canal+ offer really includes

Not all Canal+ packages provide the same level of access to Netflix. The distinction lies in two variants: Netflix Standard with ads and Netflix Standard without ads. The included plan depends on the package chosen with Canal+.

  • Canal+ Ciné Séries includes Netflix Standard with ads, alongside other platforms like HBO Max, Paramount+, Ciné+ OCS, and Apple TV.
  • RAT+ Ciné Séries also integrates Netflix, in a sports and entertainment-oriented package.
  • Canal+ La Totale combines the entire Canal+ catalog with Netflix, for subscribers who want to centralize all content into a single offer.

The Standard Netflix plan (with or without ads) provides access to HD quality and two simultaneous screens. To upgrade to UHD quality with four screens, you need to subscribe to the Netflix Premium option, available for an additional fee from the Canal+ customer area.

A subscriber to the no-commitment packages accesses the Ciné Séries pack with Netflix Standard with ads. Subscribers committed to more comprehensive packages receive Netflix Standard without ads. This distinction is not always clear on commercial pages, hence the importance of checking the details in your customer area after subscribing.

Accessing Netflix depending on the medium: decoder, myCanal app, or connected device

The experience of accessing Netflix via Canal+ changes depending on the equipment used. This point is often overlooked, yet it conditions the smoothness of daily use.

On the Canal+ decoder

Netflix is accessible via channel 80 or from the integrated Netflix app in the “Channels and Apps” section of the connected decoder. The decoder must be compatible and up to date. Without a Canal+ decoder, television access goes through other means.

Via myCanal and mobile apps

On computer, tablet, or smartphone, the myCanal app provides access to the entire subscribed bouquet. For Netflix, the simplest way is to use the Netflix app directly on these devices, with the credentials activated during the Canal+ subscription.

Reception via operator (ADSL, fiber, satellite, cable)

Subscribers who receive Canal+ through their internet box (Orange, Free, SFR, Bouygues) need to check the compatibility of their operator’s decoder. Access to Netflix is not guaranteed on all operator decoders, even with a Canal+ offer that includes it. In this case, using the Netflix app on another connected screen remains the most reliable solution.

Activating Netflix via Canal+: the concrete steps and mistakes to avoid

The activation process follows a specific order that Canal+ details in the post-subscription emails, but a few points deserve attention.

After subscribing to a Canal+ offer that includes Netflix, an email containing an activation link is sent. This link redirects to Netflix to create an account or link an existing account. Do not create a Netflix account independently before clicking on this link, or you risk ending up with two subscriptions billed in parallel.

If you already had an active Netflix account, linking it to Canal+ results in the cancellation of the direct debit by Netflix. Billing switches to your Canal+ bill, without changing credentials or losing data.

A common mistake is attempting to access Netflix from myCanal before finalizing the activation. The activation link must be used first. Without this step, the Netflix app displays an access error or requests a separate paid subscription.

Changing Netflix plan from Canal+: what is possible

Canal+ allows you to modify the Netflix plan associated with your offer. From the customer area, you can switch from Netflix Standard with ads to Netflix Standard, or subscribe to the Netflix Premium option for UHD quality and four simultaneous screens.

The change takes effect on the next billing cycle. Any additional cost appears directly on the Canal+ bill, without intervention from Netflix. Note that downgrading (moving from a higher plan to a lower one) follows the same process, always through the Canal+ customer area.

The centralization of billing simplifies management, but it also means that any cancellation of the Canal+ offer results in the loss of the associated Netflix access. To keep Netflix after leaving Canal+, you need to recreate a direct Netflix subscription before the end of the Canal+ period, using the same credentials to retrieve your history.
